Action- Betting opportunity. When placing a bet, it is said that you are wagering for a piece of the actions

ATS– (against the spread) This is betting against the oddmakers in hopes of a bigger payout. This may be done because your research shows that the outcome will be different from what the oddmakers have outlined.

Bet- wagering, placing money on a game in hopes of profiting.

Bookmaker/Bookie- an organization or person that takes and pays off bets

Cover- when your bet wins and you profit, the team you bet on produce the result you were look for.

Dime- a $1000 bet or wager

Dollar- a $100 bet or wager

Favorite- The team that is expected to win

Half a dollar- a $50 bet or wager

Handicapping- the practice of predicting the outcome of a competition and assigning advantage to contestants to equalize the chances of winning a bet.

Hook- a half point bookmakers added to the spread to prevent a breakeven scenario. Bookmakers only make money if there is a winner and loser. No one makes money on a even score.

Juice- The amount of money the bookmaker makes if you lose the bet.

Limit- the maximum dollar amount that a sportsbook will allow bettors to wager. Limits are put in place to keep betting far.

Linemaker- odd makers, person who make the betting lines or placing odds on bets

Lines- the odds given to a bet

Money line- This can be a type of bet. It can mean the amount a bettor must wager in order to win a bet and it can also be the amount the bettor wins on a wager.

  • Plus- A plus sign in front of the money line number represents the amount of money you would win on a bet.
  • Minus- A minus in front of a the money line number represents the amount of money you would have to wager in order to place a bet .

Nickel- $500 wager/ bet

Odds- a chance at winning a bet

Online Sports Betting- betting on sports over the internet

Payout- the money you are entitled to after winning a bet

Parlay- A bet on two or more teams. All bets must win to collect payout

Plus/minus- Identifies the odds placed on a bet.

Point spread- the number of points an oddsmaker expects a favorite to defeat an underdog. Points are place on each side of the bet to provide a advantage or disadvantage.
